Greetings, looking for assistance in the best solution's for my wife 4 years after her stroke having very heavy incontinence issues. She's currently using "all night" pads, which last 2 to 3 hours before I have to strip the bed.

Also uses "Always" heavy 'briefs' but with her balance issues struggles to put them on. I help but she's wanting something she can do.

Anything for HEAVY leakage that's easy to put on, and doesn't look like she's tied a sleeping bag around her waist?

Or other devices for all night and during the day?

Thanks!

There are many heavy duty products available if you search the web for adult incontinence, some sites will even send samples. Rather than a pull up style you need to try briefs that have tabs (think baby diapers).... something like these:

https://shop.tena.ca/super-briefs/6740167501,en_CA,pd.html#start=16

There are also booster pads that can be placed inside a regular pull up or brief, these are not the same as regular incontinence pads as they allow excess fluid to pass through into the brief.

Thank you for the info and links. The diaper looking 'brief' with tabs or tape on each side is most likely what we'll try.
Thank you.

I get my Mom the overnight Poise Pads for inside the brief. She is bedridden so she has to use the briefs with pads. I went up a size in the brief because there was extra absorbency in doing so.

I own a boutique home healthcare agency in Boca Raton, FL so diapers and incontinence are a big part of what we deal with. I have recommended the Purewick external catheter to many of my female clients with great results. I believe you can buy it OTC and I am not sure if Medicaid will cover the cost, but allows women to sleep through the night dry, happy, and safe.

Check out their website, https://www.purewickathome.com/

I hope that helps,
BRAD

For the bed, there are Chuks in blue and peach color. The peach are bigger and thicker. Saves you stripping the bed. Also there are washable protectors too.

My husband became impossible to keep clean after his stroke. I hear your pain. Finally we resorted to a suprapubic catheter. That's where the catheter is inserted through the lower abdomen so there's no discomfort for the patient. I change his catheter myself and it is easy and quick. This has been such a blessing - so easy, so clean, and so comfortable for him. If your wife has a neurogenic bladder, your urologist can put one in place. It is totally reversible if you don't like it, but I'm betting you will love it as much as I do. Catheters have their own problems, of course, but so does sleeping in a puddle of pee every night and you need your rest, too, so you can take care of her in the daytime.

The chucks are great for the bed. We get them delivered to us and I believe Medicare pays for that and the briefs or diapers whichever you prefer.
In the nursing homes they use the diapers. We also put a waterproof mattress pad to protect against the occasional leak.
Ive been through this with both my parents ❤️

While I was caring for my dad I tried a brand of adult diaper called “Tranquility” that was the most absorbent I’d tried. Worked well for overnight.

We now only use Tranquility brand Overnight pull-up briefs and I totally agree. VA began providing them for my husband after they could no longer get Depends during the Pandemic. I was disappointed at first to have to switch from Depends, but after using Tranquility a few times I was totally sold.

I would recommend Carewell wings underpads for the bed. They come in a variety of absorbance (i.e. blue -heavy; green-maximum). They have been invaluable to my family as my stepdad is having a difficult time with incontinence. Additionally, a purewick is available for females (its a non-invasive catheter which is used in both hospital and home settings and can be managed by the individual or family). Hope this helps!

For my wife with Alzheimer’s, I start with a pair of panties, then insert a Poise pad for males and on top of that, a male Depends. I then take her to the bathroom every 2-3 hours and change the Poise as needed. I set my alarm for 3am and change as needed. Not perfect but handles most of it. With Alzheimer’s, and perhaps, with strokes as well, nerve sensations from that region do not travel up to the brain the way they should so the person does not detect that they are wet. I also have a pad on the bed, on the couch, on the chair where she sits at the table, and on the car seat. You can get very nice pads for dogs that work well in this situation. My more difficult problem is fecal incontinence. every week or so there is an accident which is only discovered when I go to change the pad. Clean up is more involved and sometimes I just have to put her in the shower. I always change the pad before we go to the doctors or to visit relatives. . And I carry pads with me at all times. you’ve probably done so but be sure the doctor has checked her urine for any problems with the kidneys.

Theres a device thats called Pure Wick & it might be helpful. If it's really bad I would ask their Dr if they have any ideas or if they could help get something approved thru insurance if there's no Medicaid. Usually they will do whatever necessary to get something covered by insurance so def ask if nothing else the worst they can say is no but that's very rare. Good luck & hope you can find something to help. Just Google "incontinence device" & it will bring up the device I mentioned along with several other items that may be helpful also.

My mother has advanced Parkinson's and is incontinent overnight and sometimes during the day. I have found Tena to be the most absorbent but CVS has a good line of overnight "pull ups" and tab style as well. I also add an overnight pad - specifically those for incontinence, not just a Poise or Depends type of pad. You definitely need products for incontinence, not just for "leaks" like Depends. I also use underpads in the bed; Walmart has a good line and they are a good price.

BluSky1: Perhaps you can put a pad inside the brief to prevent soaking through to the bedding every 2 to 3 hours.

Can a urologist prescribe any medication to assist? I know men have the problem because of their prostate sometimes but I’ve never looked into it for a woman. Just a thought.

Maybe she has an overactive bladder. Check with her doctor and the Wick System is great. Sometimes my Mom wears two pair of adult diapers to bed, she has the disposable pads and under that she has the pads that are washable. When I change her sheets I always put a washable pad on top of her mattress so it doesn’t get wet.
