My husband 74 has a lot of anger anxiety and depression with Lewy body dementia. He’s currently on sertraline 200 mg and low dose seroquel .. and these behaviours getting worse as disease progressed.

The new antipsychotics are contraindicated for Lewy body .. actually dangerous... I realize this forum isn’t made up of doctors but I find advice here excellent and his doctors don’t seem to have any great solutions.... so hard to watch his anxiety depression and anxiety.

thanks !!

Not wanting to sound flippant about such a serious condition, but my father has LBD yet it is me doing all the shouting, swearing, anger and depression!
For my sanity, I use routine and controlled insistence, trying to avoid being sucked into the vortex of explanation descending into argument. I have the capacity to leave the scene as some silent sign of resistance to things I find unacceptable. In this respect I have leverage and can dictate (if only on a 'per instance' basis) how my attendance will be apportioned (beyond 'essential' services) according to my preferences.
As with the "sound of a tree falling in the forest" philosophical view, if you are not there to hear his rants, do they persist?

Did you actually discuss with the ordering physician that the drug combo, as you research it, is actually CONTRAINDICATED? Because seems to me this is fairly key. It is worrisome. If medications are given, and the time required for them to work (say 2 weeks to a month) sees a patient deteriorate in this way, they are usually withdrawn. Drug cocktails are hard to find, hard to monitor, hard to keep working, and need pretty careful followup. I would keep being a very squeaky wheel on this one. Congratulations on doing the work to look up side effects and see that these drugs are not typically given for Lewy's. Lewy's is really quire a unique type of dementia. I sure do wish you good luck. Erosus has a good point in "we don't change the subject when he gets upset". My brother had probable early Lewy's Dementia. He died before it could progress appreciably, but he was the master at discussing his own condition, how he saw the world, his own thoughts and how they differed from how he "knew the world really was".

Seroquel has helped my dad immensely who has LBD. His anxiety level is much lower.

My husband has LBD , he gets depressed, but we deal with it. No meds. He is on rivigasomething and now nemenda too. We often change the subject, or the environment when he seems to get anxiety or depressed.

Hi there,
Sorry for all your going through. Can I ask what differentiated his symptoms from other dementias that made his diagnosis Lewy Body ? My father is diagnosed with Alzh and vascular but I think he actually has lewy body and now the dr is questioning it as well. He is on the same med as your husband. He is also so, so angry and throwing his arms at the nurses and hitting. We literally can't get him out of hospital because his behaviors are so bad that he isn't eligible for memory or long term care. I have noticed pain is definitely a trigger as well as hunger. They have noticed the med being increased also makes him worse so they are trying to rebalance it but its the 6th time they are trying and this time he just seems like his behaviours are staying and not retreating this time with decrease of the meds. Good luck, I know this is a difficult road.

Helenn, have your hubby checked for an Urinary Tract Infection. Some times such an infection can mimic some elements of dementia, such as the anger. It's worth looking into.

The anger and often violence is common with LBD.
The only advice I can give you is this...
If it becomes dangerous for you to keep him at home and by this I mean if it becomes dangerous for HIM or for YOU the only option you have is to place him Memory Care. Probably not the option you want but your safety as well as his have to come first.
