My grandma is 88 and got pneumonia about 2 months ago and ever since her dementia has progressed. The past month she has only been wanting to sleep and doesn’t have an appetite. She is very weak and can’t walk well without assistance. She sleeps all day and all night and is constantly moaning. Sometimes she’s hard to understand when she speaks. Everytime I get her up she won’t stay up for more then 20 minutes before she wants to go back to sleep. Any attempt I make to keep her up or make her comfortable has seemed to fail. Has any body gone through this and have any advice? Or is the last stage? Thanks

In my totally layman's opinion, it sounds like she's not sleeping. If she were really sleeping, she wouldn't be moaning or moving about if she does that. You are effectively paralyzed when you are in a restorative sleep. Because she's not sleeping deep enough, she's suffering from sleep deprivation. Take her to a doctor. My mom suffered a bad incident of pretty much what you are describing. Once she was able to actually sleep, she snapped out of it literally overnight. The attending in the hospital was was amazed. She's been on melatonin for a few months which seems to have staved off more incidents. But you should really she a doctor first before doing anything.

My mother is the same age. She does sleep alot but she has always been prone to sleeping. When I was little at one period I asked her if she was going to die. I was 10. Anyway she has memory issues and lots of other problems but she has never been a meaner. I think it would be wise to consult with hospice. They should be able to define her condition and prognosis. Moaning indicates pain. It can also indicate alot of stress but i wouldn't think that is the issue here. I hope you find some solutions. It is very hard to be around constant moaning. It unmoors one and leaps for earplugs.

This is something that a Dr needs to dx. This could be a lot of different things. Some people moan do to stress physical or mental, it could be what Needtowashhair is saying that she isn't getting the REM sleep, it could be nightmares, or could be any of the medications she might be taking. Whatever it is, you are not going to find the answers here! She needs a Dr. Sorry if I sound harsh. There is just something more going on with her that we can not help with.

Good Luck!
