My current insurance is through my wife's employer. Her HR department says when I turn 65 in September that my current insurance through them will be primary and Medicare secondary, is this allowable?

woody65, if you don't sign up for Medicare, you don't get Medicare. So make sure that you do sign up for part A, ask Medicare if you need part B or get a waiver due to private coverage. Do not skip part B coverage without approval.

With us, it is the other way around. Medicare is Primary, and the insurance we've had through my husband's employer for over 30 years became secondary.

If your wife is still employed when you turn 65, yes her insurance could be primary. But if you discontinue the employee plus spouse coverage, then Medicare would be primary (with no secondary ins unless you bought a standalone policy not connected to your wife's employee group). It is to your benefit, I would think, to maintain insurance thru your wife's policy. Why would you not want it?
