My mother got into a bad car accident. She already had a broken leg from falling and now she has a fractured shoulder, fractured vertebrae, fractured ribs, and a broken femur. She has osteoporosis. After she was released from the hospital she was admitted to a rehabilitation center. It has been terrible for her. She sat in her own urine for 30 minutes. They couldn't give her pain medicine because they ran out. They left her in a wheelchair for 45 minutes (she can't sit for long because of pain). They keep forgetting about her doctor appointments and they were going to change her bedding but they said they didn't have any clean bedding to give her. They say they are short-staffed but keep admitting new patients. There is more, but the point is we want to move her to a new facility. The social worker says they if she moves Idaho Medicaid won't pay for the new facility. Is this true and is there anything we can do or is my mother stuck there until she can come home?

Call the facility that you want to move her to. They will help you get this done and they will be honest about how it works.

The current facility will do anything to keep beds full. It's part of the industry. Very common practice. And it is a mark against them to have a transfer for poor service.

When I moved my dad, the facility that I was leaving was nasty and uncooperative in the move. I contacted the facility that I wanted him moved to and they gave me a list of what they needed from the current facility, I had to stand over the idget that was supposed to do this before it got done. They make excuses and justify their lack of action, so be prepared to turn mamabear to make this happen. But, have the facility that you want her transferred to lined up 1st, they will pull a discharge on you if they think it will make it hard on you and you don't want that stress.

Stay calm and goal focused when dealing with them. They will not want this to happen and will make it as hard as possible, they will provoke you to make the move about your attitude and not their services. So deep breath and smile. Your goal is to get mom into a facility that you feel will provide her the best care.

Good luck!

Are there any other nearby facilities that provide similar services, and accept Medicaid patients?

If so, contact THEIR social services department and ask if they can accept transfers of Medicaid clients.

There’s always a possibility that her present site is attempting to retain her there, for whatever reason, or maybe just aren’t aware of a Medicaid patient’s rights. Maybe a second opinion would reveal more information.

Medicaid is a state-run program so their rules can differ by state. She sounds like she is in a county-run rehab facility right now (for Medicaid recipients). I don't know why they can't move her to one that also accepts Medicaid patients but maybe there aren't any open beds available? I agree with talking to an ombudsman.

My gosh, what a nightmare! I am so sorry that your mom is in this situation.

Some nursing homes are good and others aren’t. My father was in one that was so awful it was shut down by the state! I had issues with the nursing home that my mom did rehab in but the DON and the social worker handled it very well. I hope your mom’s issues are resolved as soon as possible.

So, you have already spoken with the social worker. Have you also spoken to the DON?

Contact the Ombudsman in your area.

I wish you well. Please keep us posted on your situation.
