As POA, we terminated my mother’s list because she’s unable to care of her for herself. I think we might’ve made a mistake because she’s currently in SNF I was not aware that this is only 100 day situation. I thought this was the nursing home. After the 100 days she no longer has a home to go to. I live out of state and my sister refuses to take her if they are unable to find a bed for my mother in a nursing home assisted-living. What do I do?

Find Care & Housing
You will find a bed for her, get busy finding one. Being a POA is not easy, so do your homework before hand.

I have been one 5 times before and have 2 more waiting in the wings.

Take care of you!

They will find a bed so start right away NOW with the social services in the SNF for placement.
If there is absolutely a glut of patients your Mom may be placed farther from home than you would like. Sadly. Then you will be on the search for a new place.
It is very unlikely your mother could have returned home without 24/7 care in any event, so look on this as almost a "good thing". Contact Social Services today.
Do know, also, that MANY SNFs have a portion of the facility for long term care as do many rehab facilities.

I worry overall about your ability to do POA work. Do you feel qualified for the level of expertise this will take, and are you able to do good record keeping and registration of your POA with all entities you need to? You may want to see an elder law attorney to brush up on any questions you may have about how to do this, and know that your POA pays for that our of your Mom's funds.

The SNF should have a social worker. Get in touch with the social worker asap to start working on what will be happening when your mother no longer qualifies for Medicare paid rehab.

They generally have a short list of places that could provide the care that your Mom needs. I had to call quite a few of them to understand costs and amenities.

Whatever you or your sister do, do NOT allow them to release her in your care.

Someplace will take her. However, it may not be your 1st or 2nd choice. However, you can put her name onto waiting lists and move her to something better when there is an opening available.

Another option would be to find another place to rent for your Mom and hire caregivers 24 hours a day. However, that has its own set of issues.

I have heard of wealthy families doing longer term rents at hotels and providing caregivers 24 hours a day.

Does the current facility have a bed for her? If not, they should be able to find a bed somewhere else for her. Does she have money to self pay or will she need medicaid? Do you or sister have POA? Your sister needs to stand strong that she will NOT be caring for your mom. So, it would be an unsafe discharge since she has no where to go.

Good luck.

Is mom expected to be able to care for herself after 100 days of rehab? If not, of course you made the right decision to terminate her lease. What you need to do now is prepare her to be covered by LTC or nursing home Medicaid after the 100 days are up. You or your sister are under no obligation to (nor should you) take her in with you.
