She is at an assisted/memory care facility. They "lost" her hearing aids. They found part of one but can't fine the other one. So we are having new ones made but can't get them until there is more clearance to take her out and it will be safer.
My question, what would people think about getting her something temporary just so she can hear something? Honestly, I just thought about it. I talked to her on Skype today but I could tell that she couldn't understand me. There are some types of aids that have been advertised on TV as an "amplifier". Do you think that might help her some?

If "going" meaning she is going deaf, will aides really help. Nce you lose your hearing, an aide will not work. And then u said she won't wear them. Is it worth the cost?

She has had them for years. Like I said, It was only $50. The replacement aids cost about $380. And that is all that we will be spending in relation to that. They have been there for about 2 weeks but I didn't know until I asked about it today. She can hear but not as well as with her hearing aids. Just that added boost. I think that there are probably certain tones that she can't hear when she doesn't have them on. It's pretty quiet where she is now living. The reason why she won't wear the hearing aids is because she said that they kept falling out. The kind that I bought would stay in her ears. But hey, as long as she understands them, that is fine. But she can't hear everything else around her. But she is 89 and in pretty good health for her age.

Mom may have been diagnosed last June but she could have suffered from Dementia long before that. If it hadn't been for my nephew living with Mom I never would have known about some of her symptoms. Her decline was monthly.

We went to her ear doctor one day. He told me the story that he visited a patient in a NH. She complained that her aids were not working. He opened the battery case and there was no battery. Took it out to the nurses desk and said " you need to put batteries in these".

It is worth a try.

I think that tiny little hearing aids are hard to handle, easy to drop and easy to get lost or broken. It is unfortunate that something that is so life changing is such a booger to deal with.

Let us know how they work out.

Get an old school ear trumpet. That won't get lost.

Why do you think they lost Moms hearing aides. Mom could have broke them. Are these something new for Mom. She may never learn how to use them. You may throw good money after bad. Depending how far into her Dementia she is she may not be able to learn anything knew.

They told me that they couldn't find them. One time, my brother found one of them in her recliner. Can't remember where the other one was located. This time, they only found one part of one of them. She was just diagnosed last June. So it hasn't been that long. She has been wearing aids for over 20 years. She has stopped wearing her glasses but she really only needed to wear them when she was reading. Which she did quite a bit. I have seen and have heard of other people who have stopped wearing her glasses. True, she maybe never learn how to use them. She is 89 years old. Will be interesting to find out.
