My brother is diabetic and has an autoimmune disease.

Absolutely not. Tell the nurses and caregivers on duty to stop the other guy from touching him.

Absolutely not. A resident should never give care of any kind to another resident. If your brother is a diabetic, he should only have his nails cut by a professional whether it be by an outside source or an RN/LPN. Toenails are to always be cut by a podiatrist.

Nurses and especially CNAs are not allowed to cut nails in my State and state my DD works in.

No
And when you mentioned that he is Diabetic and has an Autoimmune disease make that a
He11 NO!
He should have his fingernails done by a professional.
Even nail salons have signs up that if you are diabetic you should inform them.
I am surprised that nail clippers are even available to residents. (when my Husband was in rehab they even locked up his electric shaver)

If this is an ongoing "problem" I would sent a letter (post or email) to the Nursing Supervisor and inform him/her that this is something that has been happening and you think it is unsafe and want it stopped.
If it is the same resident that is doing the "manicures" I would mention that resident in the letter and that they need to stop.

Exactly, it's a liability issue, plus these items could be used as weapons if two residents got into it.

No, because of liability for the NH, and the clippers could be a potential weapon.

Could you do it?

The aides or even a Nurse can't do it so why allow another resident. I think its weird, at least an RN or LPN should because if no family, someone has to do it.

I would ask that this be stopped. You are going to be the one that will need to do it.

H3LL no.
And in my opinion none of them should have unrestricted access to nail files, scissors and clippers.

One I'm in, they don't. I guess it really is they could be a weapon, especially scissors and clippers.

No, I don't think that is a safe idea. An accidental skin nick could put him at risk since he is a diabetic. I agree with MeDolly. A trained person should come in to help him with that.

My step-father had Medicare do it, in fact someone came in on a regular basis due to his being diabetic.

I'd pass on that idea. TT the admin at the nursing home.

Medicare pays for toenails done by a Podiatrist but not figure nails.

Give your brother a good quality nail file and advise him to do his own nails. No cutting necessary.
