Your room and board are a perk. You do not pay rent.

You cannot be worked 24/7 must have time off. A replacement would be needed for your time off.

You must be paid State minimum hourly wage.

I so hope you have a place to go. My Moms neighbor had a live-in aide who told me she had not been paid for two weeks. She called APS, told them she hadn't been paid and was walking out. APS came and picked Moms neighbor up and placed her in a NH. Her husband and children had died by this time so I assume the State took over her care.

How does this person keep you there? You could probably find an equally blind person who would be delighted to employ you based on your past experience. And pay you a salary, as you deserve. You might point this out to your present client and see if it results in being treated better. If not, it’s adios. In Braille.

The question shouldn't be whether it's legal, but rather why are you doing it?

The law lets competent people make many bad decisions.

You should probably prepare yourself to stop providing care and move out.

If you were promised pay and included rent when you moved in, what happened to change things? If you have evidence, you can try small claims court on your own, or see if you can get a lawyer to help without money up front. You can stop paying rent. But things are going to get more unpleasant, so know your exit strategy. Living with the person on the other side of a lawsuit can get really ugly.
