I think it may depend on the Bank, or perhaps on local state rules. My experience (including with clients) is that local Banks who know the family will meet immediate costs like the spouse’s funeral and final doctor’s bills, if the costs are reasonable. Don’t try it with a $50,000 funeral bill, which might be questioned by the wider family, and it obviously helps if the customer and family use the branch and are on chatting terms with the staff. Ask in advance if you need to know.
