Her memory is deteriorating regarding recent and long ago. Is this a symptom of dementia?

Yes, it sounds like it's probably dementia. What is her physical condition? What medical problems does she have and how old is she? If she has no short-term memory, it sounds like she needs pretty close monitoring, particularly with medications. My mom has pretty good long-term memory, but no short-term memory.She lives in independent living, but I have people coming in twice a day to give her medications, because she couldn't remember to do that.

It would be good to get your mom a good physical work-up with blood work, etc., so make sure there's nothing else going on. Urinary tract infections can mimic dementia. So make sure she doesn't have one of those.

I found this great article on this Aging Care website. It talks about the different stages of Alzheimer's but could also be related to dementia. Hopefully you will see a pattern regarding your Mom to give you a better understanding what is happening.
