How can we legally stop my Mom from driving?

We found a great rehab facility in Wheaton Illinois. It's called Marion Joy. They did a comprehensive (cognition, peripheral vision, range of motion and 45 minute behind the wheel) test. We needed a doctors referral but all of it except for the behind the wheel is covered under medicare. Also if they find she can still drive with adjustments made they will work with her to make them. I would look for one of these or possibly call them and perhaps they can refer you to someone.

Mom is 84 and has gotten lost driving less than a half mile from her house. She also can only see out of one eye, the other eye has bad vision that she does not want help to get the vision corrected by a doctor. She can barely walk and refuses to use a cane. I have tried asking for help from other family member and they only help monitarily...not offering time to help me with her.

I finally took my moms keys after she "barely" missed a golf cart with 4 people in it when she lived in Sun City, AZ.. She hit the gas instead of the brake.. hit a car parked on the street. No one was hurt or killed, but certainly could have been. I told her that her driving days were over and she was lucky that no one got killed. She was also getting lost driving a block from home. She still blames me for her inability to drive and still insists that she is going to get a new car, etc.. but, it will not happen, she couldn't pass a drivers test if she tried and her license has expired. You just have to do it! I felt that no matter how difficult it was, it would have been worse if she wound up killing someone because I didn't want to deal with her anger .... I don't have siblings to turn to, so I simply made the decision. Make the decision before something bad happens to her or someone else. It is in her best interest. I gave her car to my 16 year old son..he needed the car and she didn't, so it all worked out! LOL

Does your state require yearly driving tests for those over 80? One thing you can hope and pray she doesn't pass, therefore making the DMV the "bad person". Otherwise, I wonder if her driving privileges could be revoked if her dr finds her medically unfit to be behind the wheel (confusion, poor reflexes, poor vision etc).
