What can you do for an incontinent elderly man who is complaining about irritation from his pull-up diapers?

Asked by mesnyder  |  Nov 24, 2009

The elderly man I care for wears diapers. He recently started complaining about complaining about his rectum being irritated by the diapers. His doctor said we should apply a cream called buttpaste to his rectum. But we also want to find him a more comfortable diaper. (He currently uses Depends.) Does anyone have any suggestions?

Give a Hug

Try Gold Bond powder. It has really helped my mom a lot. At first the nursing home didn't want her to have it, so I called the doctor and told him she had to have it if the nursing home wants her to wear the Depends all the time. Be sure the diaper he wears is not too tight, get the proper size. Mom started out with some really tight ones, because she missed wearing the tight girdle around her, but after breaking out in rashes I told her she had to get bigger ones. I do not know if they make such a thing, but if you can find a diaper that has a cotten crotch or bottom it would help.

We've noticed if we put her panties on then the Depends it solves the problem of irratation. She seems happier because she has the panties against her skin rather than the Depends.
