My Mom just recently had a stroke and is totally dependent on me to take care of her. She has no life insurance or no money in case she is to die suddenly. I wanted to know if there are any insurance carriers out there that will cover her for term life insurance. She is only 55 years old.

I know of a few companies that are able to write life insurance for people regardless of the disability. For some of these plans there are no health questions to answer on the application and no medical/physical exam required. The companies "protect" themselves by limiting the benefit paid should death occur due to illness in the first 1-3 years (but do pay the full benefit if death is due to an accident).

Generally the policy amount is limited to less than $25,000 and it may have a reduced benefit should death occur due to illness in the first 1-3 years.

The basic idea of life insurance is to provide financially for someone else who is dependent on you. Your brother probably does not have anyone financially dependent on him. So life insurance is probably not what you want. Are you trying to have funds available to cover his burial costs? If that is the case, talk to your local mortuary/cemetery. You can prepay for costs with a funeral plan purchased through them. He won't be turned down. If you are actually looking for life insurance on him for you, perhaps, to be a beneficiary, there are policies out that that are "guaranteed acceptance". Cost more but it is possible. In that case contact an insurance agency.

I have a 43 year old sister who has recently had a stroke which has left her permanently disabled. She is indigent, therefore on Medicaid. She has a history of mental illness, and drug and alcohol abuse. The family would like to purchase a small life insurance policy on her to cover funeral expenses if and when the time comes, and finding it very difficult. Is it even possible to obtain say, a $5,000.00 life insurance policy on someone like my sister?

Why does Medicare offer Medical services for the disabled yet does not offer life insurance knowing the burden on the disabled persons family to cover the cost of funeral expenses etc. can be over-welming.

Have you checked with other people who are diabetic? They may have an idea. My guess is it's very expensive, just like with other disabilities. Very wrong, but the real world. Please keep us posted and let us know if you find something.

That's a good question. I have a son with depression and he can't get life insurance. It should be illegal. He's not suicidal, and they could write that out, as it is written out of most policies, anyway.

He can't get health insurance because of preexisting illness - he was five when he got JRA! Believe me, I know you frustration, but I don't know how to help other than check every company you can and pay a huge price if you do find one. It's sad.

Hi Nancy,
This is a tough one. You maybe can, but it will be really expensive. A lot depends on what your health issues are. You should contact different companies, including AARP (I'm not endorsing them, they just came to mind), The Hartford and any others you can find. It's kind of like trying to get long-term care insurance when you are my age. Maybe I can, but the cost would be prohibitive.

Best wishes, Nancy. It will take some phone calls, appontments and footwork. I hope you can figure something out.
