If Medicaid is an option, you can find out from an experienced elder law attorney who does Medicaid planning. Medicaid pays for nursing home care for indigent persons. Other options might include a small "board and care" home, with several residents. The monthly cost is usually less than a nursing home, or at least no more than a nursing home, but board and care facilities don't normally get Medicaid in most states. That means you pay out of pocket, or she does, for living there. The biggest problem with nursing homes is that they can be dangerous places. If you put a loved one in a nursing home, it is a reasonable choice, though you then must become the safety police. Above all, don't destroy your own mental health out of feeling guilty about placing your mother outside your home. Carolyn
