My mother-in-law passed in July of 2009. She owed lots to lots of doctors. You probably have a trust account in your parent's name set up when they were still alive. In my state, your liability for your parent's bills ends when your parent's money (in the trust account) is gone. Hospitals charge $14 for two Tylenol that they buy for a penny each. Don't feel bad about unpaid medical bills, they're inflated so that the tax benefit of writing them off is the same as the cash benefit received if they'd been paid. Unless your parent is earning their own money posthumously, and having it put in the trust account, the medical community can't get cash from dead people. Just don't volunteer to pay the bills. Once you do that, they have a live person they can get money from. Good Luck. I'm so sorry for your loss. Time will make the pain a little easier to bear. God Bless You.
Jonathan
