I live alone with my mother (my never very helpful siblings live in other states). She is a stroke survivor of some 12 years, whose mind is clear but who cannot speak well and is paralyzed on her right side. In the past, she was quite a hostess and made up beautiful little presents for many friends---now she is expecting me to do this for the friends who are left, and becomes angry and abusive when I am unable to follow EXACT instructions. And just to make things more interesting she fell out of bed (through the railing!) and has cracked ribs, so of course she feels terrible. She is also stoned on medication so we have some truly weird communication attempts....Cookie making? Christmas tree?? You've got to be kidding LOL.
Hang in there---I hate to sound so negative but the whole darn season will be over after Saturday--and you keep things to as much of a minimum as you can. Like me I'm sure you are also doing all kinds of nursing chores for your mother....and in the midst of all this someone will phone you and tell you "you're so lucky to still have your mother." Then you will have mixed feelings and feel guilty--or at least that's always my reaction.
This Caregiver site really is a good one. We are all in the same boat, more or less, and we all need hugs and try to give them back. Keep in touch--you sound like a heck of a good person!
