8 years ago my husband and sons built an addition on to our house for my parents. The addition is a full apartment including a guest bedroom and 2 baths. At the time they were totally self sufficient. At least that's what we thought. Living next door to them we were able to see problems which were overlooked only because we didn't see them as often before.
Since the move my mother has developed age-related Alzheimer's Disease, they both are having greater difficulty walking and their personal care habits have declined. There are yearly hospital visits for both of them.
My husband and I need to arrange for sitters if we want to leave the house for more than a day. Fortunately my daughter or sister can usually arrange their schedules to stay at my house to keep an eye on them.
This week (August 09) my father, who is on blood thinner, had a fall and now he is unable to drive. He used to drive with in a 2 mile radius to go to the supermarket and the drugstore.
Their physician has recommended that my mother enter a nursing home since my father can not care for her as before. I don't have the heart to separate them.
I am looking into alternatives for in-home care.
I am caring for my father, Kasper, who is 96 years old, living at my home and the primary ailment is general age-related decline.
