I am a single self supporting grandmother, who is raising my 14 year old grandson, and am also the Legal Guardian of my 84 year old Father. Dad is paralyzed, unable to stand unsupported and has Alzheimer's disease. He is 6' 4" and weighs 220 lbs. Dad has lived in my home on and off for the past 5 years, after differing abuse issues and following a 'dump' from a care facility.
I have been involved in a legal battle for the past 5 years, after Dad revoked the Family Trust following Mom's death, and gave away his savings and other personal property. I was able to save his property, but his personal savings was embezzled by his second wife and her adult son, in a matter of a few short years. Getting him divorced after she had financially raped him, fell on my shoulders.
The legal expenses alone has mounted to over $250K. I was unable to maintain my business as a Real Estate broker due to all the legal issues, and personal care required on Dad's behalf.
Dad's own son tried to kill him in order to gain ownership of his property, which is now worth less than 50 cents on the dollar. The care giver I hired became engaged to marry Dad, following a deathbed POA, naming her and her children as his beneficiaries.
I was advised by Dad's legal counsel to take out a personal loan in my name to pay for Dad's long term care expenses, since he could not qualify for long term care, which I did! That one error in judgment has almost cost me my home, and has left me financially depleated. I am now left to pay for Dad's care, which I can never be reimbursed for.
Dad is currently in a small group home, and is relatively happy. I still maintain a watch over his care, knowing that it is much easier to leave him in bed, without personal hygiene than to properly care for him, but I no longer have the day to day responsibilities of bathing and toileting.
As a result of my experiences in Elder Care, I have committed to share my story along with my mistakes to pave the way for others who are just beginning this journey. When enough of us are willing to expose the corruption in the Elder Care system, we will see Elder Care Reform. We are the elders of tomorrow. The changes we implement today for our parents and our grandparents, will be the world in which we live tomorrow.
I have added an Elder Resources section to my personal website, www.PhoenixAgent.com., to assist others in navigating through the foreign world of Elder Care. You will find a printable brochure on tips to avoid the Elder games that are played out everyday in our Elder Care system, as well as articles detailing the practices that facilities and providers implement to cut cost and increase profits.
After five long years of being defrauded and financially exploited by a system that I turned to for guidance and support, I've had E.N.A.F. (Exploitaiton, Neglect, Abuse & Fraud) Have you?
