Architect Alan Kanter, A.I.A, came to home design for aging by an unconventional route. After thirty years of broad design experience in architecture, from commercial projects to housing for psychologically disabled persons, he took on a new residential client. A couple in their eighties was finding it increasingly difficult to get around in their home of 50+ years yet they hoped to stay in their home rather than move to an assisted living facility. Could Alan help them remodel their home for safe living? This assignment brought him face to face with a need for housing that will touch every aging person and his or her family. This awareness guided him to refocus his work on providing housing solutions for those who wish to continue living in their homes for as long as possible.
Alan provides housing solutions – which he calls Lifespan Architecture -- that take a broad, holistic approach to home design and remodeling. His work incorporates Universal Design, sustainable “green” building practices and attention to the intangible qualities of home that help make one’s house the physical and emotional center of life.
He holds a Masters Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning, is a member of The American Institute of Architects, is a designated LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) for green building practices by the United States Green Building Council, and is certified as an Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) by the National Association of Home Builders.
