Find Care & Housing
I worked Elder care and one day---my client was really difficult and actually, totally out of character for her, just was rude all day. I am able to contain my emotions, and I didn't SAY anything to her, she was just having an off day. I just barely spoke all day, That night her daughter called on her behalf to apologize. I didn't cry in front of her, but did so all the way home. She was so worried I'd quit. I felt bad b/c I truly loved my client and I was just fried that day. CG is hard, whether it's for love or money.

We all have emotions and while we strive to be professional--it is sometimes impossible.

Yes it is. You are only human and your feelings matter just as much as everyone else’s.

I think it depends on the family member. I would get upset if a home health aid was crying in my home, but that's just me. The patient might also get upset, so tread lightly on this one.

If you try and hold it all in, all the time you're going to lose it. I learned this lesson the hard way!
There's nothing wrong with being human. I think even our loved ones with dementia know this.
God bless!

More information would be helpful. Who is the family member? Are they supportive or critical of the care you provide?

It is ok to break down, I am sure we all do at times. There are places to do this that are safer than others.
