Hi,
My mother is living by herself in a rental unit. She has Parkinsons. We are only able to get her a few hours of daily home health aide and are hoping to increase this but in the meantime, we are looking into my brother moving in with her to watch over her in the evenings. We will not be giving her any financial assistance and the landlord is willing to add my brother to her lease. He may need to pay for part of the rent if the monthly rent is increased. My brother works full time but will be there in the evening. Will this affect her qualification status for Medicaid (annual renewal)? Will this affect the number of hours she receives home health aide (will still look to increase what she has right now)? We live in NYC. Appreciate any guidance. Thank you.

If your brother contributes money to the rent and household and by doing so decreases you mother's cost of living, then yes, it is quite possible her Medicaid benefits will be affected, I advise to consult with social services regarding this potential move.

Thank you. The rent my mother will be paying will not change. The landlord is allowed to increase the rent if my brother moves in, and my brother will pay the difference. I have also reached out to American Counsel for Aging.
