Hubby is in a wheelchair and unable to shower. He cannot transfer himself to a shower bench. So we're doing bed baths but would love for him to enjoy a real shower again. The commode would be a plus but not a primary need. Our OT ordered a rolling shower chair for us but after 2 months of waiting their vendor just told me Medicare doesn't cover it and I should just find one on Amazon. (Could have done that 2 months ago if I had known!) Before I buy one, just wanted to check around and make sure I was given the right info.

I tried getting a sliding shower chair from the commode to the shower.

Medicare would not cover this because the sliding function was considered a convenience.

I have had to purchase many items out of pocket to get convenience and usability.

The shower chair I purchased was almost $500.

If you need to buy one, it's probably worth checking eBay. While the idea of a used wheelchair for showering may not be appealing, realistically, if it can go in a shower, you could probably sanitize it before using it. If it's in good condition, you probably really don't need to do that, either.

Does your hubby have Original Medicare alone or Medicare Advantage? Might make a difference for coverage.

Call around to local social services to see if they have a donation closet

Check out all the second hand resources like Neighborhood, Facebook Marketplace, etc.

The commode chairs are great in a shower but transitioning would still be an issue.

You’re not alone — many caregivers run into this exact issue. Unfortunately, Medicare generally does not cover rolling shower chairs (or other bathroom safety equipment like grab bars and shower benches) because they classify them as ‘comfort’ or ‘home convenience’ items rather than medical necessities. That’s why the OT’s vendor said you’d need to buy one yourself.

That said, you do have some options:

• Secondary insurance/Medicare Advantage plans: Some plans offer an allowance for durable medical equipment, so it’s worth calling your insurance provider to check.
• VA benefits (if your husband is a veteran): The VA often provides shower chairs and other adaptive equipment at no cost.
• State/local programs: Some states have loan closets or independent living centers where you can borrow or get equipment at low cost.
• Nonprofits/churches sometimes have donated medical equipment.

If none of those work, yes, buying from Amazon or a medical supply store is the quickest way — but I’d look into those resources first, since it could save you money.

I know how much it would mean for your husband to enjoy a proper shower again, so I hope one of these paths works for you.

I have not known Medicare to pay for shower equipment. The one exception I can think of would be that if a person was bedbound and the rolling shower chair was also used as a commode, it might be covered. I'm sorry you had to wait two months. I would have recommended purchasing one right away. You must have a roll-in shower which is a great advantage.

I like the idea of choosing a chair with a commode opening. Showering can stimulate a bowel movement and it's nice to be able to roll it over the toilet(if you have room and the toilet isn't too high). The downside is that it may not be as comfortable as a plain seat.
