Will going into an assisted living facility affect disability payments for retired military? My dad is 93 years old with Alzheimer’s. Mom passed a year ago. He’s currently 100% VA disability and receives a substantial amount every month that covers all of his living expenses. We previously used this money to pay for caregivers. He also had a home health care person come several times a week through the aid and attendance program. We planned on now using that disability money for the ALF that he just moved into. Will moving into an ALF affect his existing disability payments from the VA? I know he will no longer have the aid coming from aid and attendance, but is the disability separate and will he continue to receive that money every month? Thank you 😊

Is this Aid and Attendance or a pension he gets from being injured while in the service? If a service related disability probably does not matter where he lives. If A&A, he may have been getting money for Mom too and that would need adjusting now she is gone. I would call your local VA office and run this by them.

I do believe A&A can be used in a nursing home for some things. There are a few veteran support organizations which help families navigate VA. Look for one (search "veteran aid attendance") or contact the Social Work department at the VA hospital nearest you.

You are correct. My MIL used A & A for MC and NH. It also factored in when she transitiined to Medicaid.

Skelly, the best source for this is someone qualified to discuss VA benefits. The American Legion and I believe the VFW has these people on staff. I found some at one of the hospitals at which my father got treatment.

I would try to locate VA centers in your area, then call and find out which department can help you.

Every person is different, with different VA quals and benefits, so you need to find someone skilled in addressing how an ALF might affect your father's benefits. But I wouldn't rely on the ALF staff though. VA quals are too personal and individualized.

Good luck.
