Social Security gave my mother a small amount of money towards my dad's funeral's costs. It would not have covered a funeral- not even a direct cremation.

As part of a Medicaid application for other relatives, we were encouraged to put some money aside in an irrevocable funeral trust. Medicaid would then not "count" it as an asset. The funeral home set it up for us. We were advised that any money in there that we didn't use would revert to Medicaid so we put enough to cover the minimum.

I think Worried and JoAnn have more information on what Medicaid will give you for a funeral. I believe it is state specific. But Social Security won't give you much.

Worried, we just went thru this and you corrected me when I said $1500.

Medicaid Funeral Assistance
New Jersey will pay up to $2,246 in funeral costs and $524 in burial costs or crematory expenses for a deceased welfare recipient who is two year of age or older.

In my State does pay money for a funeral. So maybe this person's State will too.

Joann, You’re confused. When I corrected you on the $1500, it wasn’t on a post about Medicaid paying for funerals, it was about geaton saying that they can set aside $1500 for a funeral.

And you are still wrong. Medicaid in your state doesn’t pay for funerals. Do your research please. i did mine before I posted. The STATE of new jersey is who provides funeral assistance for Medicaid recipients. Again, it’s the state paying, it is not Medicaid paying. The OPs state does NOT pay for funerals. Again I did my research before I posted my answer below. There is no funeral assistance for Medicaid recipients in the OPs state.

Medicaid doesn’t pay funerals. In some states, Medicaid recipients are eligible for financial assistance but it’s through the state not Medicaid. Unfortunately Your state, New York, doesn’t offer financial assistance for funerals.

Social security will pay the surviving spouse a one time death benefit of $225.

Like said just the death benefit. If she is on Medicaid, they will pay a small amount. That Depends on the State though. NJ pays enough for cremation. There are no frills. If wife is on Medicaid, call her caseworker and ask him/her.
