He was on active duty in korea in 1950, and was sent to medical unit when he got malaria, but he completed his 2 year term and got an honorly discharge and received a bronze star.
My late husband served in the Korean war. He was in he Air Force for 4 years and wI will soon be blind and need help. What should I do?as discharged in 1953. I cannot find his discharge papers and when I inquired for a copy I was told they burned in the 1987 fire.
Sallie, there is a specific form for documents that were destroyed in the fire. I don't recall offhand what number it is, but I would recommend what others have also recommended - enlist the help of one of the service organizations.
American Legion helped us. They'll help guide you through the paperwork and file the application for you.
They do not charge (it is illegal to do so) - their services are for free.

Do some research first-
Check with the Tucson county offices to find out if they have a veterans affairs department; our county does; we went there and they helped with the paperwork and filed it electronically with the American Legion, which took over the process.
If there's no county department, call the closest VA, ask for the Eligibility Department, and ask if they have Service Organizations, such as the VFW and American Legion, in their facilities/complex. If they do, talk with the representatives there and let them guide you.
