Sorry for the loss of your mom. How long has it been since she passed?

Search for sleep hygiene and you’ll find lots of tips.

It may take some time but don’t wait too long before checking with your primary. You need your rest.

I am not certain why this would be the manifestation of your grief. I don't know if mom was living with you but our sleep alarms are easily set, a pattern for us. Think of all the times you set an alarm and awakened on your own just before it goes off. If you were used to "setting you brain" to listen for every little sound, then it is perhaps a bit confused.

If your doc OKs the supplement of 5 mg of melatonin I would try that. I find that it makes me sleepy within 20 minutes. It doesn't act as a sleeping pill that KEEPS you asleep, but does make you briefly sleepy in my experience. I also think listening to podcasts or a book read to you (recommend the free Librivox) may work, or just a radio, white noise tape or CD, any sound that is comforting.

Our minds tend to busy themselves in the dark, churning and regurgitating things that trouble us. It is important sometimes to find a "diversion" for them. I would try a lot of things before pills, but if you need them, then a trip to the MD for discussion is in order.

Best of luck to you.
