If he is on an Advantage plan now, his choices of plans with a supplement plus a prescription plan will probably be very limited. Once you have elected an Advantage plan, you are to some extent locked into Advantage plans; you CAN, however, choose a different Advantage plan. I looked at this situation very carefully when I made the unusual decision to change from Medicare with supplement and prescription drug plan to an Advantage plan. i was warned at the time that it would be very difficult if I ever wanted to go back. That's because when you initially choose a plan, the plan cannot reject you for pre-existing conditions (which usually are not even asked about). However, if you want to change back from an Advantage plan, you can be rejected because of your health condition.

Contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program AKA SHIP. SHIPS are state programs that get money from the federal government to give local health insurance counseling to people with Medicare.

MaCinCt,

I may be mistaken, but I believe there’s a mixup here. Part D prescription plans don’t require medical underwriting. Medical checks are associated with Medicare Supplement plans. I wanted to mention it in case that’s helpful.

To help clarify. we do not have the person's age. I was referring that if the person is already on a plan such as MA and then wants to change to regular Medicare with a suppliment, this is where underwriting will occur. An insurance agent gave a lecture and told us those new GLPs are so expensive that trying to do a hop over plans will be very expensive.

Your husband can call Medicare (800)633-4227. Choose the voicemail option for help with Plan D. The representative can tell him what his options are, and how much they cost, and submit an application for him once he has chosen a plan. He should have a list of his medications in front of him when he calls, because the medications he takes will affect the cost of the prescription plan.

Or he can look in the very back of his Red, White and Blue “Medicare and You” Handbook for the list of prescription plans and call the plan he’s interested in directly.

If he is comfortable on the computer, he can visit Medicare.gov and use Medicare’s Plan Finder.

Any of these options will work.

Your Office of Aging can help you with picking the right insurance. If low income, your State may offer a free plan.

Look for an independent Medicare agent that gives advice to all forms and not just to a single brand. They have ways to do comparisons. They make their income through enrolling. That is assuming your husband is just about to turn 65, 3 months before or 3 months after. If you are looking to switch from advantage to part d, then he will be subject to underwriting based on past medical issues and medications. These changes will be higher.
