In addition to my previous post per my moms dermatologist and her home care RN Calmoseptine ointment is the best and it protects, soothes and helps promote healing. I use it every day after cleaning my mother. Works very well. Costco 4 oz. tube and cost $5.19. Better price than CVS.

IMO, any hypoallergenic wipes will work, but I find that the thicker ones are better than the thin ones. I use generics. They sell small packs of wipes; so, you can buy a few different ones and see what works best.

In re: sore bum.
Please check for pressure sore or redness, which could be precursor to pressure sore. Pressure sores can materialize overnight. They must be treated asap.

I recommend Mediseptic and Boudreau's Butt Paste. I also sprinkle powder, but some people are against powder.
There's also a prescription anti fungal medicated powder, Nystatin, if it gets bad; you may find this otc. But hospice should provide and pay for scripts, if in the USA.

Keep dad dry as much as possible. Either go commando (might not be an option), have periods where he lays on side to air out his bum, or frequent diaper changes, applying the creams and powder each time after a good washing.

They also make this spray cleaner for bed baths that hospice showed me; it's incredible in making poo come off the skin easy. His bum probably hurts from all the wiping too, so some spray may help because you have to wipe less and not so rough when using it.

If it's a lot of pain, try letting him sit on and ice pack (GEL ONLY) for 15 minutes at a time (with his diaper on or a soft towel.) Never put ice packs directly on the skin - you may know this already.

My daughter is using Pampers Natural Sensitive for her baby who gets diaper rash often.

As an RN, there are a few other suggestions for raw skin:
1 - Make sure he has a mild soap, like baby soap, for washing up.
2 - Make sure that they are allowing his skin to dry thoroughly after bathing.
3 - If he has little blisters or white spots on his skin, he may need a medicated cream for a yeast infection.
4 - If his skin is raw, he would do better with petroleum cream lightly applied over the reddened skin. It will keep his skin from getting further irritated by urine or fecal matter.
5 - When you are there, ask to see the reddened skin yourself, If the skin looks bad to you, ask for a referral with a wound specialist - a nurse or doctor who has access more products and prescription-writing "power" to make sure this gets healed.

I used a brand that had tea tree oil and it helped. Then, after trying about every kind of barrier cream, zinc oxide ointment, butt paste, and petroleum based, etc - I got some Lantaseptic. Ordered it online Amazon and it was the real deal. It contains lanolin and cleared things up.

Additionally, with the wipes, I figure they all contain about the same thing for cleansing. Avoid perfumed. I now buy the adult wipes from Sam's. 5 packs for about $9. They are the largest I found. Kid wipes are quite small. Sam's had this large size and cheapest price.

nikkimgs: Imho, oftentimes the best place to shop for items like this is an elder specialty store. There was one available to me near my late mother's state of Massachusetts, which offered products for elders.

One other thing came to mind ... is he sleeping on a mattress that pushes air through to prevent bed sores and/or a medical grade sheepskin? I first purchased from Even Pressure when my dad was in a wheelchair for his chair and his bed. I have sent to other family members and friends and they have prevented bed sores and helped with healing after I learned some had bed sores. This is the online link: https://evenpressure.com/ and you can also reach by phone at 205+758-2740. Good investment.

My husband had this problem off and on for years and his favorite was Assurance Premium Washcloths after trying several other brands. They aren't baby wipes. Good sized at 12" x 8", not too thin and easy to get out of the package. I always packed these for hospital stays and he used them at home too. Oftentimes he would develop rawness all the way up to his scrotum so check that as well. If you aren't comfortable with checking yourself, have a nurse or tech do it. Good luck and take good care.

I have babies at home, and have been knee-deep in baby diapers for a good long while. If you’re looking for the best at soothing a sore bum, it’s not the wipes, but the ointment you put on AFTER the wipe.

We tried several, and we were given this one by a friend and we never bought another kind again. Badger Baby Balm. It’s like a miracle. It soothes immediately after application (my boys would be screaming because of a sore bum, and then instantly stop when the balm goes on). It has beeswax, which provides a waterproof layer.

Trust me. This stuff is gold.

For commercial Products, Water-based pampers sensitive skin are not irritating and can be used with any unscented soap/Water … or foam no Rinse cleaner.
For very irritated/Damaged skin breakdown I've had very good luck using Theraworx Protect Advanced Hygiene and Barrier cleanser. Several products available. Spray is most economical, You can always mix with water -Instant foam.
