I am taking care of my husband with multiple medical issues. Cancer, heart failure and early onset Dementia. He has recently received a second diagnosis of another terminal cancer which is much more aggressive and he has been sent home with Hospice care. I have been his primary caregiver for over 10 years. I will now be his fulltime caregiver till end-of-life.
My question is can I get some financial assistance for added caregiver support on a part time basis? I would like to eventually go back to working maybe part time. Is this even possible? Does anyone have any suggestions who I should contact to see if we can qualify for something. We do not own a home. We currently live in a fifth wheel trailer in OC area. We only get my husbands SS along with my income from when I was working as a delivery driver. Which I am no longer doing now. Ive been online searching for hours and have not made any headway on this. Any guidance? Thank you, Pam
1. IS your husband a Veteran? If so the VA may be of help. The VA will now pay the spouse to care for the Veteran. And depending on where and when he served he may qualify for a LOT of benefits or a few. It is worth checking out. Contact your Veterans Assistance Commission they can help and their services are FREE!
2. Your husband may qualify for Hospice. (Hospice does not necessarily mean 6 months or fewer. But there must be a documented, continued decline) With Hospice you will get the supplies you need, all the equipment that you need and medications delivered.
***I see in your profile that he is on Hospice. Please talk tot he Hospice Social Worker and see what they can possibly do.**
You can contact your local Senior Service Center they may have programs that you may qualify for.
Some of them are not well trained, so be certain that your Hospice provides one who can give you guidance. The government pays huge amounts through medicare to Hospice organizations which currently are unfortunately being gobbled up by for profit hedgefunds and etc. But they are mandated in hospice to provide you with Social Services help as well as clergy, RN, MD.
A good Social Worker will know exactly what might be available to you in extra assistance. I sure do hope there is something, and hope you'll update us. I wish you all good luck.
