Where can I get arrangements to have family member transported to his home from a rehabilitation facility?

Veronica91, we just learned that transport requiring a stretcher cost us $400 a trip. This was for transport between a NH/rehab and hospital which were right next door to each other.

There certainly will be medical transport available but not necessarily free. It cost my husband over $100 to be transported about 30 miles from one rehab to another.

Why not ask the rehab facility? Your father can't be the first patient who's needed help to get home, so they must know what services are available locally.

Someone asked this a while ago about transporting someone with dementia. I googled it and found a bunch of companies who offer medical transport, even across state lines. I think it depends on whether the person needs medical supervision on the trip or just handicap transport.

You can call your Area Agency on Aging to find out what is available. Your family member may need a medi-van if s/he's in a wheelchair. Some towns and cities have special small buses that can pick someone up, but you probably have to step up on the steps to make that work. You could also call your local hospital or senior center (or the social worker or discharge planner at the rehab place itself) to ask what is available for your family member.

My dad uses our local Transportation. You can call yours and ask if they have special cabs to suit your family member's needs, it isn't much money either. Ours is about 4 or 5 dollars per person riding.
