Hello everyone. My 81 year old mom has been receiving 12 hours Medicaid Aid service but now requires more as he health issues has gotten worse.



So we applied for regular "every day" services but was denied so asked for a 'Fair Hearing'. Even though we had sent in supporting docs from her Doctor plus ER admittance after she had fallen into the bathtub 2 years ago and hit her head this made no difference.



The person from the Hearing said she can only split up the 12 hours so like 2 hours Aid visit 6 days per week. But since my mom is diabetic. is on insulin, has hip, knee and right shoulder problems plus regular low blood sugar and dizziness issues all which can occur at any given time during the day or night, doesn;t make sense to me to have an aid at a specified time for obvious reasons.



So can anyone please tell me what exactly qualifies the elderly to have regular daily Aid service please, does it mean this only applies to 'bed-ridden' elderly people?

Thanks guys. So just that I am clear on this. If mom should ever need to go live permanently in a Home for the aged and only income she has is her SSI, would she qualify for [get into] a Home please? And if she does then I am guessing all of her SSI will go to the Home?

Do you have 200k to pay for 24/7 care? Medicaid at home is very limited in hours. The next least expensive care is in an SNF. If you cannot be with her 24/7 then it may be time. Speak to Medicade about this transition.

Thanks guys. So only option would be to put her in a Home. I can't see myself doing that tbh but if push should come to shove and that should be the only option, who pays for her to live in a Home? Just for my knowledge.

If she has no assets other than montly income, Medicaid will share in the cost. Mom will use her SS and any pension she has to pay her share. Mom should have a caseworker for her "in home care " talk them about Longterm care.

even bedridden parents ONLY GET a an aid twice a week 2 hours to shower
that’s it.
System is quite broken.

You will never get 24/7 homecare from Medicaid. If 24/7 care, the person is placed in Long-term care. Medicaid has told you what they can do. Maybe time to place Mom. If she needs injections, an aide can't give them anyway.

Only Medicaid itself can tell you what is provided and what is not, and it sounds as though they have told you what they can provide in terms of in home care. As you can imagine, with a taxpayer supported state and federal program there are limitations as to what can be provided to any single patient in terms of inhome care.

If your Medicaid workers cannot explain it, you can bet we can't either. You may, sadly, be looking at in facility care at some point soon if you cannot otherwise afford more care. I am so sorry.
