Crazysue, I believe as we age, every little ache and pain causes panic in some people. Their calendars have less pages, so they want to get the most out of their days without feeling like there are speed bumps along the way.
My sig other is a hypochondriac. The headache is a brain tumor, and the ache in his back is cancer type of hypochondriac. I usually can get him to stop by saying, I am getting the keys and driving you to the ER. All the sudden he feels much better :)

When you say "hypochondriac"... What is your mother convinced is wrong that is not actually wrong, and what is she expecting you to do about it?
She does have quite a lot to worry about, after all. It can't be any fun being her a lot of the time.
Assuming there isn't anything else much wrong with her health, and her worries are taking up time and energy that she can ill afford - what sort of thing is she still able to enjoy, and what's available that might give her more productive outlets?
