Dgr, it actually varies by geographic region as well as the skills needed AND whether or not you hire privately or through an agency. To give an example . . . in 2013 I hired a companion for my Mom. She came for 5 hours a day and was not expected to do any personal care. She was directed to make sure Mom took her oral meds when the med dispenser rang, make a sandwich for Mom, take her or walks, etc. The first one was happy with $15/hour, the second one wanted $20. Both wee private hires.
A few months later, I was up to needing a live in aide. That was about $5000/month. This is in the NE. That woman was trained, helped with bathing, cleaning up bathroom accidents, etc. And we purchased her food. When I made longer visits, I would let her know ahead of time and she was encouraged to walk the grounds, stretch, and get away from things to clear her head. This was through an agency.
Make a list of what you need help with and then hire the appropriate level person.

Earlier this year I had a registered nurse for my cousin who had endstage cancer. She did any nursing care that my cousin required. She was State licensed. She had been background checked and was bonded. She through the local private duty nurses registry at the local hospital. The fee was $39.00 per hour or $312.00 for an 8-hour shift. I am recovering from an aortic valve replacement. The cost is $39.00 per hour. I am paying for 2 shifts per day for a total of $624.00 per day. My nurses do wound care, take care of meds, check my blood sugars 3 times per day. They assist me in any way that I need. They are not responsible for any food prep, laundry, housekeeping chores. They get a half hour lunch break and two 15 minute breaks. They are very helpful and professional. They will be with me here at home for another week and then at rehab for 3 weeks. I will have them again when I have my next two surgeries. Being thru the hospital they follow hospital union rules. On their two days off per week, the registry sends replacements. I have had no problems with them being late or absent.

LPN’s are available at $23.00 per hour. They cannot do wound care.
