Unless the VA is going to pay the entire cost of the nursing home, the elders social security and all other monthly income will go to the nursing home. They will lose their aid and attendance as well (they will either lose all if it or will drop to around $90 a month and will be their “personal needs allowance”.
IF the VA is paying for the nursing home then the elder should get to keep their social security. My FIL was a Vietnam veteran. He went to a nursing home (not a VA home) and the VA paid the bill & he was allowed to keep his social security.
Usually when a person is using Medicaid to pay for their care in a NH, any SS benefits and/or pension goes to the NH to help offset the cost of their care. The amount of SS and pension received depends on how much Medicaid the home receives. A personal needs account (PNA) is set up by the NH (if they become payee of the SS and/or pension) with a small amount of the SS deposited every month. In my state its $50 a month but other States may allow more.
You mention A & A. This cannot be used in conjunction with Medicaid. Medicaid usually pays more. But, I understand that the Vet will receive $90 a monthly from A&A in his PNA.
You can call your local Medicaid office and ask how it works in your State. Make sure u tell them the person is receiving A & A.
