My 84 year old mother is becoming hard of hearing and is having a difficult time on the phone as well as hearing and understanding messages left on their answering machine. I bought a Clear Sounds answering machine for them a month or so ago and am very disappointed in the quality. It is muffled and hard for those who can hear well to make out what the message says. The slow speech setting doesn't work that well either. I'd like to get them a new phone too but wanted to reach out and see what others have used and have had success with. Also, are there any other assistive devices or products (besides hearing aids) that might help her in dealing with business transactions over the phone? It is extremely difficult and frustrating for her and she has to handle all this because my father has dementia and can no longer do any of these things. I appreciate any advice or ideas or suggestions that you all have.

Find Care & Housing
Look into CapTel services. It allows for conversations to be printed on the phone screen. You need a landline and WiFi service. The company provides the phone and installation. They will also provide instructions on usage and service.

I know you're talking about deafness, but contact the Braille Institute. My mother is hard of hearing and has macular degeneration, and they got her hooked up with a free landline phone through AT&T that not only had large buttons for her vision issues, but also had volume and tone controls. Mom's hearing issues weren't merely volume-related; she couldn't hear deep tones, so her phone enabled her to adjust the tone to a higher pitch. It worked for her for quite a long time.

You might also contact your local phone company directly regarding ADA devices.

I was very satisfied with the Clarity phone we got for my mother (they make several models). If you can subscribe to a message service through your phone provider hearing her messages would be no different than hearing regular conversations.

Is it a landline? Those had excellent tone quality when plugged into the wall. If this is a cell, I don't think there is one available that meets the quAlity of a wired phone, directly to the wall.
