We were actually told our family member would be getting a transfer close to home. The name of a city and facility was provided. However, that was not true at all. We actually had to find our family member. He had been transferred 200 miles away. What should we do?

Can you elaborate? Who told you about the transfer? Is there a POA or Guardian/Conservator involved? I'm sure someone may be able to provide advice or suggestion or tell you how they resolved a similar issue. But details may help with that response.

Where was your family member transferred from? A hospital? Rehab?

If the former, the discharge planner should have been working closely with you. If the latter, the social worker plays a similar role.

There's no excuse in my opinion for something like this happening.

I'm wondering who signed the admission papers for this 200 mile away facility? Is your LO able to sign for her/himself? And how did you eventually find out about all this?

I think the first step is to find out who authorized the transfer and who made the arrangements.

I agree with Rebecca. Wouldn't this constitute kidnapping? Is it possible that one if your family members knows where he is and why and just isn't saying? This is very strange.
