Debra, asking yourself some questions will help you prepare for a doctor visit, which you should consider on an emergency basis, i.e., call tomorrow.

You wrote that this happens after you get up. How do you get up? It's not as dumb a question as it seems. Do you scoot to the edge of your chair, put your arms on the chair and push with your arms? Or do you kind of hurl yourself forward from further back in the chair?

Before you almost fall do you feel lightheaded, dizzy, weak? Do your legs seem weak, as if they're about to give out and collapse? Have you had balance issues in the past? You don't close your eyes when you get up, do you? That's not a joke; there is a condition that can cause balance issues when the eyes are closed.

Hearing is another input to balance. If you're having problems with your ears, such as plugged up ears, it can affect your balance, as I learned when I was a teen.

Are you hydrating properly? Eating properly, controlling sugar intake to avoid sugar spikes? You don't skip breakfast, do you?

There could be any number of factors influencing your near falls, so make a list of these to help the doctor evaluate the situation.

WideScreen, that website you linked requires one to sign up to view the medical papers. Any chance you could post bits and pieces of the said article, or is the research a lot of papers?

If you are falling backwards you need to be checked out by medical personnel. Please do not wait. you could fall and hurt yourself seriously. Call someone right away before you fall and break a hip or worse. Make sure you tell them the direction and how you feel when you stand.

Keep us posted!

Debrawalden, tell us more about your medical issues, that will help us gather more information. Is there someone you can call out to if you should fall, or do you have a fall alert pendent?

You will fall and risk serious injury. I suggest you get on the phone to your doctor today. They may want you checked out at the hospital to see what is going on.
