My 90 year old Mother was recently admitted to a rehab facility to strengthen her legs because she had been falling frequently. Two days ago she woke up confused and didn't remember her name. She wheeled herself out to the nurses station to ask who she was. After much gentle prompting and Mom still not remembering the nurse finally told Mom her name. Mom then remembered what Dad's name was and she recognized that the pictures on her wall was of her children. The next day I asked the nurse if they had checked for a UTI. They hadn't but after my inquiry she said they would. We are now waiting for the results.

This is true. Some elderly individuals that are on certain HBP medications and suddenly show signs of dementia, may indeed have a UTI or bladder infection that is interfering with the HBP medication and it causes much confusion.
If this suddenly happens to your loved one, be certain to ask the physician to check for a UTI or bladder infection.

Absolutely!!! Mom has Alzheimers we had to put her in the nursing home in this last June. It was a difficult adjustment but she was adjusting. Not long after, she started falling and being even more forgetful and confused. After one of the falls, we went to the ER for x-rays and the Dr. ordered a UA. He told us that in the elderly, falling and memory loss was a sign. Sure enough she had a bad UTI and we were in the hospital for 4 days. After that cleared up, she returned to the level of memory she had before the infection. I'm thankful for the Dr. that knew how to diagnose.

My Mom has been struggling with recurrent UTI for months...She is 85 and does not drink water well at all. She complains of urinary frequency and does not understand the concept of drinking water. She will tell me I had a cup of tea at lunch... She does have some dementia and I feel the UTI is making it worse. We are now doing some tests to see what if anything we can do other than give her antibiotics over and over again. I have been concerned that her bladder had prolapsed. She has gotten to where she just wants to go to bed, I feel like she is somewhat depressed. My Father passed away two years ago. She just dosen't seem to be able to adjust. I am not surprised by that my parents were married nearly 63 years. They grew up together and went to the same church and school, so it is very hard for her. It breaks my heart and I do not know how to as it were "make it better." take care and God Bless...

It could. UTIs can cause all kinds of issues in older adults, including symptoms that seem like dementia.

It's a good thing you did.
Hope your mom is feeling better soon.
After many X-rays done on my mom recently, I suggested a U test for bladder infection. Just couldn't sleep knowing my mom was in pain, and I had to think of something else to check into. The staff NH dr comes in 2 times a week. It's up to family members to request tests necessary for our loved ones. Nurses and aids don't always do a thorough check and follow thru. Good for us!!!
