Someone who could pick up a couple of things at the store for her weekly; take her to get her hair done once per week; take her to the doctor when needed; and just check on her to ensure she is ok.

Doug, I 'd say the number will vary geographically. One companion I had for my Mom charged $20/hour. That was 5 years ago! And it didn't involve driving her anywhere. Having said that, she was quite experienced and (I think) trying for as much as she could get. Another woman helped and was thrilled to get $12/hour. The best deal would be to find someone local so they aren't commuting a long distance (which they have to consider as time they are investing).
