Trying to get mom's dementia diagnosed. The next step is a memory clinic. Is this where she gets her diagnosis? She needs the right meds.

My husband was diagnosed with vascular dementia thanks to his neurologist and a memory clinic in our city, that was affiliated with one of the local hospitals. It was there, after talking to him and testing him that the diagnosis was discovered. The referral to the memory clinic did come from his neurologist.
My husband was put on Donepezil, which is the generic form of Aricept. That seemed to help some, but please know that as of right now there really isn't medication that stop the progression of the disease. The best it can do is slow down the progression.

You need to take Mom to a Neurologist. He will run tests. Make up a list of things you have seen. For me, I made it short. I typed it because my handwriting is unreadable. 14 font and a space between each comment. Ex:

1. Sundowning
2. Can't reason with her
3. Processing what is said to her, slow
4. Left pot on the stove

By giving him a list, it helps him in asking the right questions.

I don't know what you mean by a memory clinic. Also, there are really no meds proven to work to cure or slow dementia. There are some medications that doctors "sell" as such, but so far no cure on the horizon, and the search continues. There are some meds and med cocktails for those with serious agitation problems; those DO help.
You do not tell us what diagnositic have been done? The usual is for your Mom to be seen by her doctor, a referral to neuro-psyc MD who can specifically decide which tests and scans/etc are needed.
