I've heard this can cause stress and disorientation. Is this true and if so what can we do to minimize problems.

Find Care & Housing
I know this must be stressful. When is she scheduled to move?

I don't know much about nursing homes, since, my LO was in a regular AL, then moved to a Secure Memory Care facility. I will say that my LO did not have a hard time. She actually, seemed to be much more content when she arrived in the Memory Care facility, since they were better equipped to meet her needs. They are specifically trained about dementia behavior and it was such a relief to have them tend to her needs, without constantly calling me with every minor thing. The regular AL staff didn't seem to know much about dementia, imo.

Her move was rather quick and I told her casually as we were getting into the car to go. It was located in her hometown, so she had fond memories of the place and was very happy about it.....Going home and all.

I played her favorite music on the ride and talked of good times. When we arrived, the staff helped get her into a wheelchair and took her to dinner as I signed paperwork. They moved her belongings from my car into her room and when I went to check on her, she was sitting beside her roommate, smiling and seemed fine. I hadn't seen her as happy in a long time. She and and her roommate became fast best friends. Her roommate was higher functioning than her and told me not to worry, that she would take care of her. And she did, until the roommate passed away.

I hope your transition experience is good. I'm sure you'll get some more tips. It really depends on your LO's level of progression. Is she able to comprehend what's going on?

What is the reason for moving? If the first home didn't meet your needs, then by all means move to a better one. The stress on your loved one is probably not as hard as the stress it causes you. So much red tape, etc.
