I always appreciate my aunt's words, "Let me do what I can while I can do it."
If a LO has late moderate dementia, will they even remember the occasional use of an assistive device to help them get up?
Mine is still strong, but is super short on energy. Yesterday they got up - with a belt - and walked to the living room for a few exercises with the therapist then back to bed after a bathroom stopover. Today they could barely stand - legs couldn't move - or to even sit and scoot along the side of the bed.
For days like these, I'm wondering if a sit-to-stand device would be practical, on the assumption it won't rob her of her mobility sooner because she won't get used to it do because she won't remember having to use it.

No, it's better to have a walker, cane, etc. now rather than have to get used to them later.

It's never too soon to have assistive devices on hand, ready to use when you do need them. A sit-to-stand can be kind of cumbersome and take up a lot of space, and relies on a helper to make use of it. Try a walker first, something they can hold onto for a little extra support. I am experiencing weakness in my legs, and pain in my hips, so I use a wheelchair which we already had on hand. I either use it like a walker, and to carry stuff on, or sometimes, when my legs are hurting from standing, I sit in the chair and wheel myself around. I use it to hold on while standing up out of bed. If I had a walker, that would be useful as well, but I just happened to have a wheelchair, not a walker.
I agree with doing as much as possible independently while one can! I have always said the same.

If your aunt is struggling to even stand, sit or walk then by all means it's time for her to buy whatever assistive devices can help make her life easier. There's absolutely NO reason that she should have to spend her final days, weeks and months struggling to do the most basic of things. Instead it's time to make her life as easy as possible for her.
