My spouse is in memory care. I was told when he was admitted we could decorate his room with furnishings, pictures, etc. which I did.

Today, when I arrived his room was rearranged, the dresser was moved to his closet and pictures moved and rehung.

What say you?

So what? If he’s getting the care he needs, why does it matter? There’s no need to micromanage his room arrangement.

They said we could do the arranging/decorating before my husband was placed there. We personalized it to his liking. I think they could have at least discussed it with us out of courtesy.

Ask the facility if they did it, or if spouse requested these moves. If facility says they did it, then ask WHY they did it. I agree with others that if this is a shared room this may have been done for space concerns, safety concerns, or other. Just a simple question to ask them really. Let us know what they say.

Hello
He is in a single room and didn’t make the request for changes. He said he told staff he didn’t want the changes, but they did it anyway. I’m waiting for a response from the AL director. I will notify you of the results. Thank you for the input.

Is this a single room?
The only reason I can see moving a dresser to a closet is to make room in the room for another bed.
I will be very interested in your update when you find out why this was done.
And a room should not be rearranged without telling you first AND moving furniture will confuse a person with dementia. ESPECIALLY dangerous if he is used to getting up at night to go to the bathroom (if he still does this) you get used to the placement of items and can navigate the room in low light, once things are moved you no longer have "landmarks" to guide you.

He’s in a single room. They didn’t move the bed or tv stand, just the end tables which are out of the way and against walls.. Hopefully I will get a response on Monday and will provide an update. Thank you for responding.

This should never been done without consulting with you first.

Dementia people need things to be familiar. Changing your husbands room around will now cause confusion. Its his room he is paying big bucks for and should be left alone.

Please come back and tell us what the Admin says.

Yes, I left a message for the director and am waiting for a response. There already was plenty of clearance for emergency/wheelchair and pictures. No way to bump into the pictures. I really don’t know their reasoning.

What reason did the staff give?

Was a deep clean (inc walls) needed? Or touch up painting going on?

Hello, no deep clean or painting. I’m waiting for a response from the director. My husband said there were 3 staff moving everything and he questioned it, but didn’t recall a response.

czechchick,
In June you mentioned you may be looking for another MC.

Is this still the same MC who advised you to bring your spouse home on the weekends?

Do you think he should be moved to another facility?

Yes, this is the same facility. I think it’s time to start interviewing other facilities.

Pick your battles. I doubt they did that because they had a bunch of time on their hands but rather because they needed easier access.

Perhaps there is a good explanation, but I question why they were redecorating?

czechchick, I noticed that furniture needs to be arranged so that a wheelchair or emergency personnel carrier can make it through. As for the pictures, maybe the Staff was bumping into the photos. Best to ask the Staff why the changes.
