And do I need to bring the death certificate along with the will?

I was executor to my mother's estate and I hired a lawyer to help me settle it. There is no way I could have done it by myself. Yes there is taxes to be filed. One is called a Fiduciary income tax return and the other is a personal income tax return if their income is a certain amount or there might be a tax refund. You need an EIN number as an administrator of an estate to file the fiduciary return. Glad you are calling your lawyer. IRS agents are not experts in estate laws.

Your wrong about EIN numbers and the tax returns. At least that part I have an expert. My husband was a revenue agent at the IRS for over 20 years. But he nevef had to deal with an estate after a relative died. I'm calling Moms lawyer on Monday.

Get a lawyer. This is way too complicated for you and there are no simple answers. Wait 'til you get to the part about what order the bills are paid in and how long the waiting period is. I'm sure you know nothing about EIN numbers and establishing estate accounts, filing the 2015 and 2016 tax returns, both state and federal, for the person and for the estate.
