Mother is 88. I take her supper everyday. Take her to all dr. appts and all her shopping. Living on a very slim income through SSI. I do all her lawn care, laundry, clean her house, etc. I have been told I could be getting paid for this care. She's on Medicare and owns her house. I have 4 siblings but I am the one taking care of her. If it's possible in this situation to get paid can you tell me exactly how to do it. Thank you.

Medicaid does NOT take the house. Mom will be allowed to live in it until she passes. Then Medicaid will put a lean on it to recoup the money they put out. If Mom has more than 2k in assets spend it down. Her SS is well under the cap.

Selling the house would disqualify her for Medicaid until she spends down the money. Has to be sold at Market Value.

She obviously can not afford the house if you have been coming out of pocket for 10 years. She needs to sell the house and use the proceeds to pay for life.

Nobody likes this kind of change, but we must do what we need to do to be able to live. She doesn't get to make all the decisions if she is not paying her own way. Whomever has a financial dog in the fight has a say.

She has to have a medical need for assistance and it doesn't sound like she has anything that would qualify. Everything you do for her is tending to chores, not her. Those don't qualify for ADLs. Well, cooking might, but meals on wheels would solve that need.

CrysClark, the vast majority of grown children who are caring for a parent do not get paid.... unless the parent can pay them from their own retirement fund.

Is your Mom able to keep up the cost of owning a house, such a property taxes, utilities, house insurance, trash pickup, cable, repairs, etc.? It may be time for her to downsize and use the equity from the house for a more manageable senior apartment. As you and I age, that lawn will double in size every year :P

It could be the siblings aren't helping because they know it is time to downsize. And if they were to help out, then Mom would never move. I had that with my own Mom, she would never downsize.... Dad on the other hand would, if giving a chance, start packing in a NY minute.

Ok. If she where to apply for medicaid of which we have talked about this she would have to sign her house over. She is not willing to do that. From what I have read she can not own over 2000 dollars in assets. She only gets 1200 from SSI. I have been covering all additional expenses that she cannot afford for 10 years. This pandemic hit my household hard financially so I have been trying to figure out how to help us both out. Thank you

Medicare will not pay for caregiving services, family or not. However, if Mom was on medicaid, then your state may have a program that could pay you. In my state it's called In Home Support Services (IHSS) and it's administered by each county.
