Hello,


My father in law is independent but has some hearing loss. He does not need assistance with daily care activities. The difficulty we are having is he does not have anyone to help him with medical procedures or emergencies. He can drive to routine appointments. However, he does not have a dependable person to help with taking him to the doctor, (for procedures when he is required to have someone with him and emergencies) and monitoring his progress after procedures. He also needs someone to advocate for him when he is not able to and is not wearing his hearing aids.


We live far away from him and he does not want to move. Anyone have any suggestions? Is this a job for home health care or geriatric case manager?

I would call both and find out what services they cover, how services are implemented and what the fees are.

Does he not have a friend that could help him? I would try his County Office of Aging. This seems to be something that is really needed when families are far apart. Same with being a Church member. You have a Church family where some will help. Whoever takes the job should record the visits.

Your last sentence is your answer. A geriatric care manager or certain home health agencies can help with this type of caregiving. It’s always wise to have someone attend every appointment and take notes on what happens. Often, there is information lost or not translated back well when you just ask the senior
