My mother (102) is ambulatory and quite healthy physically and mentally. She lives in an assisted living facility in Lauderhill. I try to visit and shop for her but I am quite ill and it is getting increasingly more difficult for me and I live about 25 miles away. To be honest, the way it looks is that she is going to outlive me even though I'm trying my best to stay alive to help her out. I pay all her bills, etc. and provide an aide to take her to the doctor if I'm unable to do so.

One of our independent pharmacies in town carries a lot of groceries too and has a delivery service within the city limits.
Another way would be to advertise in your local paper for someone to perform these tasks.

If you can find the service at her facility that would be ideal. If not, it might worth the investment to use a home healthcare agency. Not only can they shop with her but also visit, which is what you are in need of also. For shopping, Some grocery stores also have this service. Are you able to use any internet for the shopping? That way you could keep track of expenses and not concern yourself with changing money. Also, our town has some private companies that will shop for you for a fee.

Have you asked the admin people at her facility? My Mom is in AL and they have a group of volunteers who do all sorts of things for the residents. Hers also has a van service, at no extra charge, that takes residents weekly to Wal-Mart, Walgreens, K-Mart and Safeway, plus a bakery. Each Saturday, they have a different route, so monthly, it's possible to go to all those places to shop yourself. It's a great service, especially for those in wheelchairs or walkers, because it's very difficult for family to take residents and all their equipment sometimes. My Mom now walks with a walker and is on 24/7 oxygen, so we have to transport small 02 tanks with her too....that only last an hour or so each one....

Home health agencies can provide people who will visit with older people and take them shopping. I don't know whether or not they would shop for and deliver personal items. The agency that I spoke to (in case my dad will agree to using their help in the future) charges about $22 per hour, plus mileage if transportation is involved. If you want assistance for only two hours the price goes up to about $25 per hour. If you speak to the people in charge of the assisted living place, they may be able to give you the name of a local agency. As far as the personal items are concerned, are they items that you could order online and have delivered directly to your mom?

How I feel for you. We are the generation that truly wonders if we can outlive our parents. Do you have any siblings or reliable grandchildren? Now would be the time somebody you can trust to hand a POA for your mother's and possibly your care in a medical emergency. Visit with an attorney that can help you make this happen.

I am the youngest of 4 siblings that has been catering to my elderly parents for 25 years. It has taken it's toll and my physician is after me to get healthy or I will become a statistic. Sounds as though you need to take a step back and focus on your own health as well. Good wishes to you.
