I'm trying to figure this out but it's not clear to me from reading various articles and SSA documents: My mother and father both receive social security income and dad's is higher than mom's monthly amount. Mom recently died. Is it my understanding that my father will only now receive his monthly SSI and nothing from my mother's SSI going forward?


Thanks to anybody who can clarify this for me.

Yes MOM's will stop but DAD will need to file for the survivors benefit. Which is $255.00 and is intended to help with burial expenses. And that only goes to the surviving spouse and is a one shot deal. Be sure to have a death certificate. It can be done by mail and phone.

Since Dads is higher, Moms SS will be dropped. The Funeral director has probably already told SS that Mom passed so her checks will stop. I would just call ur local SS office and make sure everything is OK.

You should call social security, these changes don't just happen.

Please speak with them to understand exactly how it all works. You may have to be on hold for an hour to reach them, but they will spend the time to assist you.

Which ever is higher, if it was hers, that is what he will get, if it is his, that is what he will get. You only get one.
