My mother is in a nursing home and is being cared for by my brother who has not given us any information about our mothers health. He has set up "no contact" for us and will not answer phone calls or e-mails. We recently found out thru other relatives that mother had a stroke and was moved to a nursing home. My sister has power of attorney and all three of us have Medical Power of Attorney.

Texmingo, most NH and AL insist on only one point of contact. If bro signed her into the facility, then they deal with him. If you have POA, fax them a copy and if it is still valid (not repealed by mom) then they should allow you to talk to her.

I found out today that we can contact social services in Ill. for advice. We located the nursing home and called to find out that no other family members (siblings) were listed on the paperwork. My mother was placed in a nursing home after she suffered a stroke about 3 weeks ago. I live in TX and my sister in OK. Mom relocated to Ill last January.

I am both my Mom''s POA and Health Care Proxy when she was in rehab they would and could only speak with me... I think your Mom has a new updated POA and HCP..

Bring your legal papers to NH and find out what's going on... You'll have to do it during M-F day working hours...No one is usually there on the weekends in the business office..

Good luck...

No, a sibling "can't" do this. But he obviously has. How? Do the rest of you live some distance away? Have you lost contact with her?

As cmagnum says, you need to show up in person, with your documentation. If it is some distance and there will be a delay getting there, send a letter explaining who holds the POAs.

BUT ... if mother has given POA to your brother and that document is dated later than your, he may indeed be within his authority.

How in the heck did this happen? How long has your mother been in a nursing home?

Do you know what nursing home she is in? The three of you of you need to take your medical POA with you and visit your mother in a nursing home and find out what is going on.
